At Beyond Words Creative, we believe every child deserves to see themselves in a story — to feel seen, valued, and celebrated just as they are.
Founded by Jo Smith, a children’s author and passionate inclusion advocate, Beyond Words Creative was born from one simple idea: what if the magic of a story could help children understand one another a little better?
Inspired by Jo’s non-verbal autistic son, our flagship book Harvey’s Silent Discovery opened the door to a movement. Today, our mission is to spark empathy and understanding through inclusive storytelling and ready-to-use resources that empower schools, nurseries, and families to nurture kindness and inclusion in everyday life.

📘 Educational Resources & Lesson Plans – Curriculum-linked packs that make it easy for schools and nurseries to teach inclusion, emotional literacy, and understanding in a way that feels natural and fun.
👩👩👧 Training & Support for Nurseries – Practical workshops and toolkits that give early years staff insight into the parent journey, helping them understand the emotions and challenges families face around diagnosis and support.
✍️ Author Support & Mentoring – From championing inclusive authors through the Beyond Words Book Awards to guiding new children’s writers in creating meaningful stories, we help bring more inclusive books into the world.
